LSU Coach Les Miles made good on his invitation issued months ago to a Mountain Brook, AL teen battling cancer. Mountain Brook teenager Sid Ortis has been dealing with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, for the past year. Last March the 16-year-old had surgery to attempt to remove the cancer from his lungs. Around that time he received a phone call from LSU coach Les Miles, his favorite coach from his favorite team. Miles, telling him, “Life is not how long you live, but how well you live it.” He spoke at length with the 16-year-old, and then prayed with him.

Miles invited Ortis and his family to travel to Baton Rouge this past weekend for LSU’s game with Auburn. Ortis not only met Miles, but he was given so much more.

LSU Board of Supervisors member Scott Ballard posted about the event on his Facebook page,  “To grant a dream to a young man that fights everyday just to live is a blessing of mine and our family at LSU. I hope that I can always give more to this world than I take away, I took away so much from this young man that never complained and was so grateful for this day, Les Miles did this with no fanfare and it came from his heart. Thank you coach. This is what we stand for and I thank LSU Athletics. I am humbled by this and hope you pass a dream for someone forward.”

In 2014, Sid was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer. Since then, the Mountain Brook community has rallied around the teen, at one point blanketing the community in purple and gold balloons and ribbons in honor of Sid’s beloved LSU Tigers. While he was in Louisiana this weekend, Mountain Brook High School honored him with the bust-through that the high school football players ran through to enter the field at Friday night’s game against Vestavia Hills.

Though the teen was in pain in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s game, he rallied for occasion. His mom, Lynn Ortis, wrote this on Facebook: “Sid is feeling great, talked to coach Miles and is having the best day of his life.”
