Denham Springs man sentenced in fatal crash

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) –

A 33-year-old Denham Springs man has been sentenced in connection with a fatal crash on the Interstate 10 bridge in Lake Charles in 2012.

Judge Mike Canaday sentenced Jason Scott Bennett to 20 years in prison with eight years suspended on a vehicular homicide charge.

Bennett pleaded no contest to the charge on Dec. 1, 2014.

According to authorities, Bennett ran into a tow truck on the bridge. A passenger in Bennett’s vehicle, 27-year-old Derrick Stephen Barton, was killed.

According to court documents, Bennett was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the accident.
